Miami vs. Boca Raton for a Jewish Family: Which Metro Fits You?

6 min read

Zooming out from individual neighborhoods, the biggest choice many families face is the metro itself: the Miami-Dade communities or the Boca Raton / Palm Beach area. They're both major Jewish population centers, but they offer fundamentally different lifestyles. Miami-Dade is dense, urban, oceanfront, and international; Boca is suburban, spacious, and spans every denomination.

Lifestyle & feel

The Miami-Dade communities — Aventura, North Miami Beach, Surfside, Bal Harbour, Sunny Isles — are compact, walkable, and cosmopolitan, with a strong international and Sephardic presence and a lot of condo living. Boca Raton and greater Palm Beach feel more like traditional American suburbia: single-family homes, gated communities, more space, and a large, well-established Jewish population across the denominational spectrum.

Synagogues & denominations

Both have deep synagogue networks. Miami-Dade's densest communities skew Orthodox, Chabad, and Sephardic, tightly clustered for walkability. Boca offers the widest denominational range in one place — Orthodox, Chabad, Conservative, Reform, and Reconstructionist — though spread across a larger geographic area.

Kosher & schools

Miami-Dade's kosher scene is dense and highly walkable in its core communities; Boca's is strong and growing but spread out. Both metros have established Jewish day schools and yeshivas, concentrated in their most observant pockets.

Housing & price

Miami-Dade leans condo and high-rise, with a premium on oceanfront. Boca offers far more single-family housing and land, often with more square footage for the money away from the coast. Your preference for a condo lifestyle vs. a house and yard may decide this on its own.

Which metro is right for you?

Choose Miami-Dade if you want a dense, walkable, oceanfront, internationally-flavored community with everything minutes away. Choose Boca / Palm Beach if you want space, single-family homes, and the widest range of denominations and schools in a more suburban setting. The clearest way to decide is to compare the actual homes: ShulSearch ranks active listings in both metros by walking distance to the synagogue you choose, with kosher spots and schools on the map.
